Deepest condolences from Carlos Quilez

April 29, 2008

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

… I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position. …

Sincerely,

Carlos Quilez

So tasteful of him to have dated the letter one day before the unqualified widow was able to lay her husband to rest.

We’re sure Carlos sends his heartfelt condolences, etc.

  1. Is it any different than Arkley,Emmerson,or Geist sending letters out even prior to this one? I mean, that’s what he was most likely writing in response to.

  2. As far as qualifications for the job, Johanna has got the field covered, easily.

  3. Yeah, dick. Did any of the people you name make overtly sarcastic remarks about a woman whose husband was just killed? Nice to see what kind of pile of shit you’re made of.

  4. Quilez is and always has been less than human. As if Johanna was running for office based on her qualification of having her husband die. Quilez knows her qualifications quite well, which is why she has him scared. Rather than deal with the issue, he mocks a widow. Classy as ever.

  5. “As if Johanna was running for office based on her qualification of having her husband die.”

And that’s what she should do,run as a write in candidate. If she is indeed that qualified, voters will react to it by electing her.

  6. Esquan, are you seriously going to defend the tone, tenor and wording of this statement? You stand by this? Really? If so, that’s everything about you I’ll ever need to know. If not, obsess elsewhere.

  7. Hey look, another carpetbagging fuckstick who made their money elsewhere and moved to this area to bring religion to the heathens.

    How quaint.

  8. “… I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position. …”

Carlos can believe what he wants, its a FREE COUNTRY. Free speech is a bitch when it doesnt agree with YOU!!!

    Whining bugs are so unbecoming…..

  9. Oh yeah, since I am a huge asshole.

    Enjoy!

  10. you are a huge asshole, or you have a huge asshole? all that reaming has to catch up with ya one day…

  11. Theo you dimwit. How is this a free speech issue? Did anyone say Carlos didn’t have a right to say this or anything else to the governor? No, fucknut. They raised questions about the content of his letter. Perfectly appropriate questions about a perfectly inappropriate letter, that NO ONE HAS DOUBTED HE HAD A RIGHT TO SEND. You honestly can’t be that dumb.

  12. Who is Carlos Quilez?

And watch that carpetbagger talk mouse, I too am a carpetbagger, except I came without the carpet and without the bag, and I’m really, really poor, have no influence, no political connections and no clout.

I console myself by being really, really ridiculously good-looking.

  13. The difference between having the right to do something and actually doing it is called “judgement”. Carlos has apparently erred, possibly to Clendenen’s detriment.

  14. Quilez was Local Solutions/Green Party’s candidate for Harbor District last year. He’s a big Clendenen supporter.

  15. theo – bite me.

go over to the dark side and post your crap.

Frankly, Quilez is entitled to his own opinions and so are we here at the mirror.

And our opinion is that Quilez sucks as a human being. Was he so harmed by the Rodoni’s that he has lost all ability to be gracious and sympathetic during a time of loss.

Frankly folks – thats the crap that is moving to Humboldt now. Forget the good life and live like city animals.

  16. so….Carlos is “crap”, “sucks as a human being”, is “a carpetbagger” and is “a mouse”? just for giving an opinion? the bugs are babies if they cant argue issues without calling names…

“good old boys” who inherited their land will always be angry at real men who have to EARN their way in life…

  17. Whew … the 2nd District dodged a bullet when they didn’t put Q on the Harbor District.

What a classless, insensitive thing to do.

  18. please, let me live like a city animal!!!! im sick of living in 1950’s humboldt county. oaklahoma by the sea needs to change!!!

  19. sending a letter to a governor is “insensitive”? i think that the WHAMBULANCE needs to be called here. are you all babies here?

    insensitive,lol

  20. Theo, how was your day today? Did you enjoy the view? How about the sun?

  21. I thought it was quite a pretty day outside myself….

  22. i was up near Horse Mountain earlier today, it was awswome…..great views, great sun..

  23. anon.r.mous,
have you seen any offers for that land i was looking to buy?

  24. Sure have, but I charge a finders fee.

Want to change the subject again jackass? Or how you you like your work numbers jammed up worse than the last major screw-up?

  25. “Sure have, but I charge a finders fee.”

thats fine, im used to paying realtors for services.

“Want to change the subject again jackass? Or how you you like your work numbers jammed up worse than the last major screw-up?”

    huh? lay off the meds…

  26. “… I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position.

saying that the statement MAKES FUN OF roger is baby talk. roger was a real man, he could take opinions and process them without having to resort to name calling.

  27. Seems like like a nice little preemptive strike by Arkley,Emmerson and co.If anyone has the audacity to speak against their desired political appointment is an insincere asshole. Why couldn’t they have waited to send their letters? Why,because they knew that someone may have something to say about it and they could easily then tarnish the individual for being what they consider insensitive.

  28. Theo really is dumb. Look. He’s now trying to argue that the tasteless comment was insensitive to Roger, not to the woman, about whom the comment was clearly made, who just lost her devoted husband and partner of three decades. This is shameful, and Theo’s now thoroughly demonstrated stupidity is nothing but a dull and pathetic sideshow.

  29. It’s not a phony letter. The bugs didn’t make this one up. The letter has been making the rounds for two days now among those who think it’s appropriate to politically profit from a man’s death. Read it for yourself.

    Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I am a resident of Humboldt County 2nd Distric. Our County Supervisor, Roger Rodoni, recently died in a tragic auto accident. Johanna Rodoni has asked that you appoint her as Supervisor. I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position.

We have our Supervisor’s election on June 3, 2008. I urge you to not appoint anyone until after the election. I think that for the sake of fairness and the democratic process, that you should appoint whoever wins the election to serve out the rest of Roger Rodoni’s term. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors have no pending business that is so pressing as to warrant an immediate appointment.

I urge you to please allow the democratic process to take its course.

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

    Carlos Quilez

  30. im not arguing that the letter was insensitive to ANYONE. im calling you BABIES for whining about it!!!!!!!

  31. call the WHAMBULANCE, someone gave an opinion that the baby bugs didnt like!!!!!!!!

  32. Or as in this case, Esquan, the person in question really is insensitive. You far-lefters went off the reservation when you started condoning tactics like this. I can’t believe any thinking, caring person would sit there and defend a comment of this nature about a woman who just lost her husband. You’re disgusting.

  33. attack? jeez, grow up…

  34. Fuckstick, eh? I remember the Fucksticks from up around Westhaven? Could these be kin? I was sure all of the Fuckstick family had either moved or died off? Guess not. Well, any friend of the Fucksticks, must be a friend of mine.

Oh, wait….the Fucksticks? No, they’re assholes. I thought you were talking about the Fuckwads. Gosh, my mistake.

  35. fear of change is funny…..it turns grown men into little babies…

  36. Aah. Now we’re baby bugs. That’s so cute and sweet, Theo. Thank you. It sounds an awful lot like someone has a touch of blog envy. But we’re good sports about things and always eager to incorporate reader feedback. So just to be clear–are you suggesting that we blog only about opinions we agree with, or are you suggesting we blog only about opinions you agree with? Take a few minutes to sort that one out for us, and while you’re at it, go fuck your whiny bitch self.

    Love always,
    The bugs

  37. Thanks for proving my point.

  38. Thank you for not having one.

  39. Eko, you’re the best. I thought the bugs hit the whiny-bitch-self out of the park, but the Westhaven Fucksticks steals the show. Thanks.

  40. bugs,
you guys post on all sorts of issues, im not complaining about your site. im complaining about the pansy-ass thread that we are partaking in. whining about a guy’s opinion is fine to a point, its the name calling that i call childish.
face it, the guy didnt “make fun” of roger’s wife. roger would have been a man about it, so should you.

  41. Okay, okay, Theo. We take it all back. We like you too (although we also enjoy calling people stupid names, even if we shouldn’t). Thanks, friend.

  42. I’m wondering whose listserve that was sent out on. Eric’s posted the call for letters days ago, so it makes sense that the machine went into full gear… is it Local Solutions this time? For Clendenen? Or Salzman for Estelle? Sure looks like all the usual suspects.

The shut it down crowd, the regulation crowd, the business killing crowd, but most of all, the attack Palco crowd.

I’ve been thinking about all the articles calling Roger controversial. Funny, up to a certain point, Roger was just Roger. The most controversial thing he did was vote against CAMP funding.

Then, the DA filed the Palco suit, and Roger was percived to be a threat, so what went into full battle gear? The Stoen/Salzman machine. They started the campaign to discredit Roger, by hook or by crook – they put up a thousand dollar “grant” to talk about his Rainbow Ridge Ranch being rented from Palco.

    And the attacks never stopped.

Now they’re talking about the “swiftboating” of Mark Lovelace because some tough questions have been raised.

Yet look at what they have done – so clearly exposed over the last 4 or 5 years.

That’s the kind of climate you are looking at if you vote for Lovelace. For Clendenen or Fennel.

    It will only get uglier.

  43. And, by the way, Theo, I kind of agree. Roger was tough. He knew what was what and he took it. Johanna is also tough. The nastiness of the EPIC/Salzman/”Local Solutions” crowd is nothing new to her. She’s lived it already, too.

ONly now, when he has died, and people realized what kind of man he was, and what they had lost, did they momentarily set aside those blinders they have adopted because of the smear machine. Hopefully they will realize, and remember, that reality does not reside in Salzman & Co’s painting of an adversary.

    Far from it.

  44. Looks like Mr. Esquan is ignoring the challenge to back the specific contents of this letter. Instead, he changes the subject and continues to support the vague generalizations. No one’s objecting to generalizations. They and I object to the disparaging comment Carlos Quilez made about Johanna. It was unnecessary and uncalled for. It only compounds the offense that he would proudly send it to the far-left community.

  45. We should all be thankful that Carlos only sent a distasteful and low-class letter to the Governor.

When push comes to shove in these political battles, Quilez has been known to resort to 12-gauge intimidation.

  46. Sheesh Theo….take a breath.

    Easy dude.

Carlos’ knack for misstating the obvious is legend. Look, if the only qualification Johanna had was to be the political beneficiary of a tragic death, then I’d probably agree with his argument.

When you get all twisted up you go after that which you think threatens you instead of what’s just right there. The name calling gets a little tiresome after a while but, it is what it is…..just like the bug’s spray at the top.

None of the other authors tried to cheapen a good person with the glib and hurtful assessment that Carlos heaped on some heavy hearts.

We’re all a little on edge right now. Something you seem to be accustomed to.

What chafes is that you and Carlos seem to leap at the opportunity to seize advantage from a tragedy.

The honest process put Roger’s butt in that seat three times. If the votes are where you think they are, to put Johanna’s butt in that same seat for a while won’t change the eventual outcome. She surely is more than qualified.

So, my truculent blogger, that fear of change doesn’t make a baby out of anyone….except perhaps yourself in a compulsive need to ridicule a real or imagined opponent.

It’s something Roger never stooped to and that is why even his detractors held him in high regard.

So relax a bit Theo. Nothing is ever really won or lost in here.

Ok….let the the name calling resume. Take your best shot.

Then let time take care of the rest.

  47. Nicely done, Mayor. Good perspective.

  48. “What chafes is that you and Carlos seem to leap at the opportunity to seize advantage from a tragedy.”

what opprotunity am i seizing advantage of? if it were up to me, i would appoint roger’s wife for the remainder of the term, it happens all the time. i was just commenting on the tone of the thread. dont ASSume things…

  49. “They and I object to the disparaging comment Carlos Quilez made about Johanna. It was unnecessary and uncalled for.”

Every single letter sent to Arnold,at least prior to the funeral were uncalled for and politically motivated,Carlos’s included.

  50. So I filled out the prank dialer number with Carlos’s number, what will it do?

  51. But I should add that others sent in support certainly beat Carlos to it.They take the crown since they knew they could capitalize on the first person who spoke against their wishes.Carlos just happened to be the one who jumped into it head first.

  52. Mr. Esquan, do you or do you not support what Carlos said about Johanna? The question is simple. You do or you don’t. Yes or no.

  53. Did the other letters insult a grieving widow?

  54. There would be few complaints about the letter had Carlos simply omitted that one sentence. Mr. Esquan knows it, and that’s why he keeps trying to deflect attention away from the simple issue raised. I’m left to assume he supports this shit. Be proud, Esquan. Be proud.

  55. “Every single letter sent to Arnold,at least prior to the funeral were uncalled for and politically motivated,Carlos’s included.”

Are you literate? yes or no.

  56. “There would be few complaints about the letter had Carlos simply omitted that one sentence.”

    which sentence?

  57. Well Theo

I get it. My little boy talks about how assume means making an ass out of…you know the rest.

I wasn’t speaking to your politics…just your anger.

But you hold the target so far forward it’s very hard not to want to take a shot.

Tried my best to resist the temptation. I guess my best was lacking.

You seem to thrive in this little world of discord.

(Cripes, I want to say something unkind here.)

But, I know you are capable of so much more but, just world class cranky.

I thought I acknowledged the equal opportunity name calling with…

“The name calling gets a little tiresome after a while but, it is what it is…..just like the bug’s spray at the top.”

Be easy Theo….the object of the game is to go beyond the game.

  58. yawn. sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

  59. Hope ya’ll join Rodger in his grave

    You too Mirror

  60. because you don’t understand them, fuckwad.

  61. DD’s mother is a cunt

There, now I’ve come down to your level-

  62. Ok ok Theo.

In the absence of a response we all get a little third grade logic.

At the least, your last retort was less hostile than usual.

    Could be a breakthrough.

Fact is I think you have something legitimate to say. It’s just hard to plow through all that rhetoric and hostility to get it done.

Just wondering where the sticks and stones were? I tink what troubles you is that I didn’t take a cheap shot…..just an observation.

You are pretty sensitive after all. Even in the absence of a target to shoot at.

    That’s a good sign.

  63. Theo said “i would appoint roger’s wife for the remainder of the term, it happens all the time.”

There’s some sort of law or protocol or somethign that dictates the time frame. Hard cold facts.

  64. So-o-o – anybody know whose listserve that went out on? AEB? Local Solutions? Some newly made up group? I’d like a copy.

  65. The only things missing from Carlos Q’s cc list was puss balls, rat puke, theo, butt cheese and Bon Bon. Bon Bon who was pitching her boy Clif before Roger’s body was cold. I believe in free speach so let me be very clear. Fuck you Carlos. Fuck you Theo. Fuck everyone on the cc list.

  66. Why yes, Esquan. I am both literate and able to answer a direct question. Which of these two are you not?

  67. The blogger occasionally known as Faux Yo blogged anonymously at 9:32 and 9:59, giving the Mirror both its very first C-word AND its very first death wish!! We’re so excited!!! Oh, and he’s so blocked.

  68. Rose, that’s Clendenen’s list. Estelle Fennell has a broader range of people supporting her and is a fine candidate. She’s a classy person, and besides, she was doing well in the polls when Roger was killed and does not need to resort to the kind of tactics shown by the two extremes.

  69. Sounds like a double standard here. If it’s okay to write a letter supporting Mrs. Rodoni’s appointment then it is okay to write a letter opposing it. Pull your panties out of your asses and stop the hypocrisy. No one is entitled to a free pass in our political system. Will anyone who votes against her if she is appointed be accused of bashing the poor widow? Sounds like the political opportunists here are the ones pushing Rodoni because they think she is untouchable.

  70. Quilez actually lives in the 2nd district whereas Arkley, Emerson and Geist live.. where? Oh that’s right, NOT in the 2nd district.

  71. And the attempt to gloss over the salient issue continues. The upset is about a single insulting statement made by a singular asshole named Carlos Quilez. As Anonymous 7:16 and 7:27 knows, no one has ever suggested abridgement of voting rights. Keep trying to win at all costs if you like, but I’d rather lose with decency and humanity.

  72. Quilez, has shown himself to be exactly what he is. The real story is has Bon Bon done the same with her reputed letter written Thursday evening, before Roger even made it to the morgue. If/when this can be proven she will have no choice but to immediately resign or face an unbeatable recall. Perhaps either way it is past time to change the face of local ethics and send the lying, conniving, evil bitch packing? Enough is enough.

  73. Interesting reading… ≤i>District 2 – Timothy Carter and Roger Rodoni are trying to unseat Roy Heider, the one-term incumbent. Carter, a logger and pipe-organ builder, and Rodoni, a rancher who has championed agricultural interests for more than two decades, voice few political differences with Heider. But both say that voters have grown dissatisfied with the incumbent.

Heider says he’ll forego any hard campaigning and let his record speak for itself. If he loses, “maybe the next person will do a better job.” North Coast Journal, March of 96

Found some other fun stuff, too, by accident… was googling Neely, Fulkerson, Sparks (there were once three women on the Board.)

  74. You think an opinion that someone isn’t qualified for a position is an insult? Your skin is too thin for even the filtered sunlight of Humboldt County. Anyone who puts their name up for election or appointment has to expect that some will oppose them. If she is tough enough to jump into the political fray so soon after losing her husband, she is tough enough to take this. Targeting someone for harrassment because they voiced their opinion borders on criminal.

  75. Many of Estelle’s supporters are very conservative business people, including republicans and democrats. Most all the southern Humboldt Fire chiefs and departments support her. Estelle stopped her campaign after the tragic death of Supervisor Rodoni. I believe she also attended his memorial. Please do not link her to these tactics. Thank you!

  76. Johanna isn’t complaining, and your inane characterization of this community’s widespread loyalty to her bordering on criminal itself borders on laughable.

  77. Censoring, eh mirror?

  78. Posting someone’s home phone number on a blog and encouraging people to harrass them isn’t loyalty to anyone and does border on the criminal. The Bugs’ veneer of funny guy has worn through and we can see the pathological hatred clearly.

  79. “Sounds like a double standard here. Sounds like the political opportunists here are the ones pushing Rodoni because they think she is untouchable.”

Exactly, the letters being set out immediately after in support of her were calculated and manipulative indeed. She could have just simply sent a letter herself and the vultures like Emmerson could of had some decency to wait. But no,since now he individually has a personal stake in this a manipulative action was taken. You better believe that anyone criticizing their votes will be accused of attacking a widow. This was a complete Rovian tactic.
As far as Carlos’s response,he should’ve left out everything about the Roger,Johanna, and the passing and should have just addressed that he should just appoint the winner of the June election. It would’ve been just as effective.

  80. “the Roger”

    ?

  81. Posting someone’s home phone number on a blog and encouraging people to harrass them isn’t loyalty to anyone and does border on the criminal. The Bugs’ veneer of funny guy has worn through and we can see the pathological hatred clearly.

    A Pathological Hatred Bug?

Is that in the same family as a June Bug? A Louse?

    -boy

  82. Closely related to rabies.

  83. Oh grow up losers. Quilez himself circulated the letter all over town with his phone number and home address on it. No one said anything about harassing him. He was obviously proud of his accomplishment, and I’m sure he’d welcome an opportunity to discuss it. Still waiting to hear from mresquan though as to whether he supports the wording of the letter. Funny how he can’t seem to shut his damn mouth, but also can’t seem to answer the question. Go figure.

  84. Okay my bad. I see mresquan finally acknolwedges that Carlos should have left out the remark about Johanna’s qualifications. He’s right. The letter would have been fine without that, and I’m glad we can agree on something.

  85. acknowledges. Whatever.

  86. The Bug itself said, “The good news is, the fuckstick included his phone number in the letter— 707-768—-. Y’all might could give him a call or whatnot and let him know how you feel.”

  88. S-P-R-A-W-L-

  89. You promised us a long time ago you were moving away Rob, but unfortunately for us, you are STILL HERE.

  90. birdie,
please elaborate on why i should move away. also, maybe you could tell me where i should raise my kids……

  91. birdie,
im in favor of sprawl, im a businessman…..duh!!

  92. Anyone who throws a jab like that at a widow the day before her husband’s funeral, then proudly sends it around town, deserves what he gets. Besides, I wouldn’t worry too much about Carlos. He’s the most famous shotgun owner in Humboldt County.

  93. with haters like you around, im glad that i have a shotgun too….

You know you make it big time when these happen! Congrats Bug! Next will come the rape threats. I’ve oddly had a few of those as well over the years.

I could never figure out why…

  95. With tags for this thread “Carlos Quilez sucks his own dick, deepest condolences etc., he waves a mean shotgun, Johanna Rodoni, late-night calls are the best, making fun of grieving people rocks, Roger Rodoni, unrelated to the Westhaven Fucksticks” as well as posting Mr. Quilez’ home phone number and encouraging people to call him (late at night is best), with an additional post by another nutcase with an auto dialer, to delete and block someone for using the “C” word is bizzare.

Anyone who still thinks this blog is just about poking fun should see this as a reality check.

  96. OK,I know I’m a slut but when this guy calls me out for some R&R even I was a bit shocked. When he wanted me go down on his gun ,well you know I just assumed he ment his wanker not his shot gun. After seeing his tennie wee-knee I knew this might be trouble. I stripped and began my famous deep throat on his double barrel buddy. He was looking at some computer print out list and moaning ,”they like me”,”they really like” and then it was all over with a singular tiny wet drop his reward. The bastard tried to pay me off with some bullshit tickets to see some whacked congressman or something. What a jerk. I’ve had some weirdo’s before like that preacher guy. But hey at least Jimmy had a tool to work with.

  97. It seems the nature of this post is proportionate to the disgusting comment to the Gov. by Quilez and was rightfully outed.

  98. 1:10–you’re not so much for smarts are you. You’d notice if you were sentient that the C-word and death thing were not deleted. Which is why you can read them above. If you don’t like the variety of discourse presented here, stop reading. It seems pretty simple.

  99. Anonymous 1:10, you’ve posted eight comments yourself on this blog in the past six hours. If you are so repulsed by what you read here, why do you keep coming back? Consider us not your cup of tea and go be happier elsewhere. Hugs!!

  100. 100th post!

  101. Kill us now, Mous(e). How we long for the days of obscurity, like a week ago, before Roger died. Since then the bug-lovin’ and the bug-hatin’ have reached fever pitch. In response, we plan to unveil a bold, new strategy to be even less relevant. It may involve automatically rerouting everyone to the Catch-a-Poo game or something so we can get some sleep.

  102. Congratulations on the BIG 100 Bugs.

And yes, less relevant would be good, but Heraldo already has that covered nicely.

  103. Real classy post Humbug. Feel better?

  104. Esquan, are you seriously going to defend the tone, tenor and wording of this statement? You stand by this? Really? If so, that’s everything about you I’ll ever need to know. If not, obsess elsewhere.

How can we judge the letter when all that’s been posted is a sentence fragment?

  105. Quilez was Local Solutions/Green Party’s candidate for Harbor District last year. He’s a big Clendenen supporter.

Local Solutions people were involved. The Green Party was not.

  106. Hey Eric, why don’t you talk to your classy friend Carlos about his classy letter. If he hadn’t written it in the first place, we’d all feel better.

  107. Yeah Erik backed Quilez all to hell for Harbor Commissioner.

  108. I’ll say this. Carlos has a right to his opinion, repugnant as it might be to some. I think he let his hatred blind him, and it is sad. He’s become a good soldier, an Ork.

mresquan is right – his letter would have been just as effective had he left out the reference to Johanna. Perhaps he will offer an apology. Maybe in private. I hope so.

Politics is an ugly business. It’s worse here lately. If Johanna is perceived to be in the way of getting a “progressive” candidate in there, all stops will be pulled out. I have no doubt. Carlos’ letter is by no means the worst you will see.

  109. Hey Eric, why don’t you talk to your classy friend Carlos about his classy letter. If he hadn’t written it in the first place, we’d all feel better.

Johanna applied requesting an immediate appointment on Monday, two days before the memorial. It’s certainly her prerogative to do so, but for those of us who believe that would be a very bad idea, we didn’t have the luxury to wait for three days. Had she waited, we would have waited.

    I also wrote a letter.

    Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:

You have already been contacted by Jill Geist of the Board of Supervisors, Ms. Johanna Rodoni herself, and several of our prominent Republican activists to suspend “normal protocol” and immediately appoint Ms. Rodoni to replace the deceased Roger Rodoni. While the majority of the community grieves for the family following this unthinkable tragedy, most of us do not believe this appointment should be made without due consideration to all candidates (not only those running) and to a process that ensures the interests of Humboldt County’s Second District as a whole will be factored into the decision. I believe that the rush to appoint Ms. Rodoni could only be justified by a combination of emotional considerations and partisan politics. Neither is proper justification to suspend protocol and process.

The Second District is a microcosm of larger scale politics. We have a “conservative” area represented according to popular perception by the norther half. The “liberal” area according to the same perception is represented by the south. Although the conservative vote has prevailed in the elections of the past, the demographics of the Second District have changed dramatically so that two strong liberal candidates emerged to challenge Roger Rodoni’s 12 year hold on the Board position. The community is very polarized and many of us in “the south” have often felt, with or without justification, that we have been disenfranchised. But we have been encouraged by recent election results for other positions and issues that the district could be brought together. I personally support the Fortuna farmer in the race, Clif Clendenen, who represents that potential.

I am not asking you to appoint Mr. Clendenen. I understand your political connections and I understand that you would prefer to appoint someone acceptable to your constituency. What I ask is that you solicit applications for the interim position and perhaps wait until the June election to see if one of the candidates wins over fifty percent of the vote. It would make sense to appoint that candidate for the interim period. I seriously doubt the absence of one vote on the Board will create a crisis in the meantime.

The appointment of Johanna Rodoni would give her an enormous advantage in the election as I am certain you are aware. We anticipate that she will either run as a write-in candidate, or simply continue to run her husband’s name with the assumption that you will appoint her to replace him should he win the election. I simply ask that we have at least a few weeks wherein the campaign remains one about issues and qualifications. That will best serve the interests of the Second District and Humboldt County.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. While I have not, and probably cannot in the future, support your political candidacies, I do respect your sincerity and integrity.

    Respectfully,

    Eric V. Kirk
    EVK/

Now you can pull sentences out of context and tear into that one as well.

  110. God, Eric. Are you also going to pretend your Carlos’ remark–“I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position”–is acceptable under any circumstances? Others have defended the timing, the concept of letter-writing, the frigging democratic process itself, as if any of these are at issue. The post is about your close friend and political ally’s unforgivably tasteless remark. You know it, and you can’t respond to it, so you divert attention. Whatever works for you man.

  111. You mean taking it out of the context of a woman who had just lost her husband and was preparing to bury him? That context? Nice try. It is only within that context that the offense of Carlos’ statement is truly understood.

  112. I’ll bet Jill’s letter didn’t crack any jokes about widows.

  113. Just ignore him, 6:15. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t keep him from drowning in it.

  114. I’ll bet Jill’s letter didn’t crack any jokes about widows

    Nor did Carlos’.

  115. Well one thing that I have learned from Eric’s letter is where he sits on the Ms./Mrs. Debate. Other than that, I don’t see anything else about that letter. I’m pretty sure there is a legal timeline in which things have to be done, which is why there are so many people being rude jerks.

  116. Well written Eric.

My only observation is if there truly has (and I think there has) been a dramatic shift not so much in demographics but in campaign organization, aren’t the votes there for your candidate anyway?

Carlos picked the wrong moment, to say the wrong thing, to the wrong people. He proved himself to be an unprincipled hack in the Harbor District campaign. This lame attempt to trot himself out as a player says a lot about his character.

I also wrote to the Governor. I just didn’t copy every organization that I thought might help me in my next race (If there will ever be one.) The more Carlos speaks, the less persuasive he becomes.

  117. I found the real letter from Carlos. Enjoy:

    April 29, 2008

    Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I am a resident of Humboldt County 2nd Distric. Our County Supervisor, Roger Rodoni, recently died in a tragic, but advantageous auto accident and I have waited patiently for several hours before launching this tasteless political maneuver.

Johanna Rodoni has asked that you appoint her as Supervisor. I do not believe being the wife of a deceased Supervisor to be a qualification for an elected position.

But as a paranoid obsessive shotgun wielding and office seeking failure, I believe I have the qualifications to make recommendations in such matters.

We have our Supervisor’s election on June 3, 2008. I urge you to not appoint anyone until after the election, or I will race into my house and get my shotgun and threaten you with it.

On a related note, please don’t drive too closely to my shrubbery or you may see the business end of my shotgun too.

I think that for the sake of fairness and the democratic process, that you should appoint whoever wins the election to serve out the rest of Roger Rodoni’s term, unless it is someone I don’t support, including the dead guy.

If you don’t I will cradle my shotgun lovingly all night long while in the fetal position in the corner of my bunker as I continue to slowly go insane with rage over the political issues I feel so deeply about following my relocation to the area just a few short years ago.

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors have no pending business that is so pressing as to warrant an immediate appointment, except for, of course, an immediate and undisguised power grab orchestrated by Bonnie Neely that was staved off by Rodoni and one other supervisor until his death.

I urge you to please allow the “democratic” process to take its course, or I will have to resort to daylighting my 12 gauge.

Thank you for your time and understanding about 1) my lack of respect for grieving widows, 2) my whole-hearted and blind allegiance to the widely respected extreme left-wing group Local Solutions and 3) my need to resolve situations peacefully through pre-emptive shotgun diplomacy.

    Sincerely,

    Carlos Quilez

  118. shotguns are legal….deal with it…

  119. theo:

sure they are, but a judge removed Carlos’ right to possess them after he proved he couldn’t play well with others and used one for purposes other than downing game birds.

Do you know that, or are you blindly defending Quilez’s right to escalate a verbal argument by retrieving a shotgun from his residence and stuck it in the face of a neighbor over a disagreement about trucks legally passing through a road Carlos’ house fronts?

    Just wondering.

  120. Eric your letter is pretty bad, dude. The Gov would appoint someone in line with Rodoni’s views not his. Let me ask you a few questions. God forbid, if John Woolley’s had been the vacant seat due to an untimely death who would you want to fill the seat? Do you think David Cobb would be up in arms demanding a private lunchon with the Arcata mayor to make damn sure his view was front and center? Finally,do you realize that every conservative and moderate would first and formost talk to his widow about her feelings before anything was done? How do you think she would feel if someone pounced on a political opportunity before her husbands body was even cold? God Bless Johanna and the Rodoni family for all they have given Humboldt Co.

  121. “How do you think she would feel if someone pounced on a political opportunity before her husbands body was even cold?”

Unfortunately some who want her appointed did exactly that.

  122. This has been an upsetting week for everyone. Roger was not the only one who died that I knew. Can’t we all just be kind to each other?

  123. It won’t happen, Carol. Because there is a certain faction that JUST WANTS A PROGRESSIVE ON THE BOARD, OR ON THE HARBOR DISTRICT OR WHEREVER THE HELL ELSE. IT ISN’T FUCKING ABOUT WHO IS GOOD OR WHO ISN’T, WHO IS QUALIFIED OR WHO ISN’T, IT IS ONLY WHO IS PART OF ONE CAMP OR ANOTHER, ABOUT WHO IS “PRO-G-R-ESS-IVE.” AND VALUABLE IN THE ANTI-PALCO UNENDING CHOKING WRITHING GRASP FOR POWER.

IF ANYTHING COULD HAVE COME OUT OF ROGER’S DEATH IS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A REALIZATION THAT JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE THINKS DIFFERENT FROM THE PROGRESSIVES DOESN’T MAKE THEM BAD!!!!

    BUT IT HASN’T.

ERIC’S CAMP WOULDN’T HAVE SUPPORTED ROGER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BECAUSE HE WASN’T ONE OF THEM, IT DIDN’T AND DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER THEY ARE MARTIAN OR RUSSIAN OR ANDALUSION, ALL THAT MATTERS IT THEY ARE NOT PROGRESSIVE.

Unfortunately Johanna’s timetable was set for her. Don’t blame her, you F———. Jesus. Politics is a sickening business.

  124. No comment, except to agree with Carol here…

fuck (sorry for my language) politics…to the right…to the left…in the center…

  125. Eric your letter is pretty bad, dude. The Gov would appoint someone in line with Rodoni’s views not his. Let me ask you a few questions. God forbid, if John Woolley’s had been the vacant seat due to an untimely death who would you want to fill the seat?

Well, I would have some ideas, but I expect the Governor’s would be different. It would be his call, not mine. But he’s an elected representative, so I would petition him to make him aware of my thoughts.

Do you think David Cobb would be up in arms demanding a private lunchon with the Arcata mayor to make damn sure his view was front and center?

I don’t understand the question, but that’s a moot point anyway. I don’t speak for David.

Finally,do you realize that every conservative and moderate would first and formost talk to his widow about her feelings before anything was done?

I doubt that very much. It certainly wasn’t true when Leo Ryan was shot in the 1970s. Nor when Moscone was shot by Dan White and conservatives used the event as a springboard to talk about how oppressed conservative pols were in San Francisco.

What’s at issue for public representation is what’s best for the community. We abandoned the inheritance of public positions when we abandoned feudalism.

Lastly, we don’t need to ask her how she feels. She wrote a letter to the Governor explaining precisely how she feels about it.

How do you think she would feel if someone pounced on a political opportunity before her husbands body was even cold?

We wrote the letters in response to hers. If she had waited, we would have waited as well. Personally, I think you should blame the conservative activists who pushed her into it while she was still grieving.

God Bless Johanna and the Rodoni family fr all they have given Humboldt Co.

I have no problem with that sentiment, and there’s no point in speaking my mind about what he gave as a supervisor. He’s immune from criticism now, and that’s fine.

  126. “Do you think David Cobb would be up in arms demanding a private lunchon with the Arcata mayor to make damn sure his view was front and center?”

Did he demand private meetings with the mayors of Fortuna and Rio Dell to the best of your knowledge?

  127. somebody didn’t wait. somebody jumped the gun.

  128. There were people saying that Mrs. Rodoni should be appointed to Roger’s seat the very night he was killed. It’s on Heraldo’s blog, date and time stamped. It wasn’t progressives who started the race to fill his seat before his body was cold.

  129. “I’ll bet Jill’s letter didn’t crack any jokes about widows.”

    “Nor did Carlos’.”

Eric, I enjoy your blog and frequently agree with you, but you have absolutely missed the boat on this one. Carlos’ remark was reprehensible, and your frenzied obbfuscation and defense are equally so. The difference is that we’ve come to expect this sort of thing from Carlos. I’m stunned and incredibly disappointed that you would support it.

  130. Carol, thanks for that perspective. It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend out there, friends. Let’s mow our lawns, grill some burgers, put little umbrellas in our drinks, and hug our children. We don’t need to sit around all weekend and fight with each other on the internet. Comments in this thread are now officially closed.

Additionally, to avoid fanning the flames further, we are removing Carlos’ phone number from the post. (Little shout-out to our favorite HB on that decision.)

And Carol, in response to your e-mail, we couldn’t agree more. We have certainly seen what’s what and who’s who in this debate, and can say unequivocally that Estelle, her campaign and the HCDCC have earned a lot of respect from us in recent days. Thanks.
