County residents struggle to remember why they’re not at work today

Columbus Day?

Really?

Is that still a holiday?

Too bad Columbus didn’t discover a day on which kids go to school but parents get to stay home and drink.

That’s what we would consider a holiday.

  1. Shit! I had to work today. I hate these BS holidays. But I’m going to drink a PBR sixer tonight to make up for it.

  2. I beg pardon bug, but I am not at home drinking and I don’t where the eff my kids are. Yea! for explorers.

  3. Isn’t this the day each year we’re supposed to feel guilty about someone doing something to one or another group of indigenous people?

  4. Yeah, one of those political correct types started lecturing me today about how Columbus abused the indigenous people of this continent, then I realized that they were off work and still complaining about the reason. Sheesh !!

  5. Yeah Chris it’s like a national day of shame, but with pay.

Yeah, well all of that talk about what the Euro’s brought to this continent has to be placed in context.

I like to say that Columbus won the very first America’s Cup. If it was not him, it would have been somebody else.

Could you imagine Cabeza de Vacca Day? Or how about Ponce De Leon Day?

    Enjoy the day off!!!

  7. Uhhh – the kids have school today – you don’t have kids?

  8. Our freaking kids were home all day. They SAID it was a holiday. Was someone not being entirely truthful?

  9. My little darling was home today too. An in-service day or some such shit. It was so nice out we actually had a good day together, a rarity at her age…

  10. The Dastardly City of Fortuna was open for business, just like they are on MLK day, only without the outrage.

  11. :) Mine had a half day, too, inservice or something…

Thanks, Humbugs, for making me laugh this morning.

  13. One of ours tried to tell us once that she got a week off for Halloween. Turns out she’d been suspended for smoking. Kids these days, Carol, I’m telling you. A hell of a lot more creative than we ever were.

  14. Grin.

Back where I grew up (Massachusetts), Columbus Day is still a school holiday. I guess Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States is not required reading.

What say you?
