Errant priorities leave Arcata area with two supervisors, Fortuna with none

Danger, danger. My campaign is tanking.

With an impending election just around the corner, it’s painfully clear that incumbent 2nd District Supervisor Clif Clendenen’s fundraising for his re-election campaign hasn’t yet taken off with any sort of urgency. A recent Times-Standard article reveals Fortuna’s cider king has spanged a little more than $13,000 during the most recent fundraising disclosure filing period. His challenger Estelle Fennell has raked in more than triple that with $47,000. That doesn’t bode well for the Clifster.

It’s also worth noting that Clendenen’s lack of any competitive monetary support this election go around from his 2nd District voters may very well be linked to his unfortunate choice to focus on issues important to fellow 3rd District Supervisor Mark Lovelace.

While steadfastly honoring his campaign pledge to maintain a pulse during his tenure in office since his election in 2008, it’s unclear what exactly Clif has done in the past 3 years for his own district.

Looking at today’s board agenda, Clif seemed incapable of mustering a single special presentation to steal valuable mic time from his fellow supervisors to let voters know there’s anything he cares about. Or pretends to care about. Fourth District Supervisor Virginia Bass was able to give the nod to “Library Week,” proclaim April as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” and even teamed with 1st District Jimmy Smith to recognize April as “National County Government Month.”

Perhaps signaling an end of his political value to Lovelace, Clif couldn’t even bandwagon his way onto Mark’s special  presentation recognizing April as “Grange Month.” Unfortunately for Clendenen there won’t be a runoff in November, so he wont be able to take full advantage of National Apple Month in October.

  1. I don’t think Clif has a snowballs chance in hell of getting re-elected.

  2. Bugs, I think you need another PBR to help with your focus. With only two candidates in the race there is no November runoff. For better,or for Clif, this one gets done in June.

  3. Hey – Arcata zombie Elizabeth Conners is running the appleman’s campaign. That ought to resonate in Fortuna.

Bye Clif…..The 3rd district is only supposed to have one vote on the board.

  4. Thanks Anon 9:20. ***Hiccup***

  5. Clendenen never could shake that “deer in the headlights” look he gets every time he speaks, or is asked a question.

  6. A moderate’s fate: mudslinging.

  7. Moderate? More like a tool for the far left and progressive machine in Humboldt County.

  8. Point made.

  9. Hey according top the Times STandard, Clif had an old $23,000 campaign debt he still owed on, so he used 2011 donations to pay off his 2008 campaign debt.

  10. Fennell had twice as many people (and they were from Fortuna, clifs home town) at her Fortuna Vets Hall campaign Kickoff fundraiser than Clif did at his in Scotia event. Why was that?

There are also a lot of people from Arcata helping run Clifs campaign, with Elizabeth Connors being his main manager. Why is that?

  11. A Yokel’s fate: mudslinging.

  12. Cliffy should move to Arcata. He could put the little guy on his shoulder and Marky can be the mouthpiece!

  13. No Wonder Clendenans people are attacking Fennell, look at the support she’ getting.

    Business’ Owners Endorse Estelle Fennell

  14. So, I have a question, indirectly related to this post, I suppose, though it is related to the Rex Bohn-Sheryl Seidner race.

It has been rumoured, and there has been enough smoke to merit that perhaps the rumour has a kernal of truth to it,that Josh Drayton, formerly the owner of World Cup Coffee, and now helping Bonnie Neely and Patty Berg run Seidner’s campaign, is, in fact Heraldo, or one of them (as some think there are multiple Heraldos).

Does anyone know what kind of disclosure requirements there are? As Heraldo is attacking Bohn left and right and supporting Seidner, and if Drayton IS Heraldo, do they not have to disclose that?

Who can a complaint be lodged with?

  15. With all the moaning about “big-money” in the race, why is it no one points out that it is since Salzman’s arrival that races got REALLY expensive in Humboldt County – and that Bonnie Neely has been involved in some of the biggest money races – even to the point of getting in bed with Salzman last go round in a desperate attempt to hold on to power.

  16. Rosie the Revisionist,

The big money started with Cherie Arkley, the 1st Lady of Security National, running for City Council. You know that. Since when has a Eureka council seat been worth $100K + ? Since Arkley, that’s when.

  17. Heraldo is posting an ad for Cheryl, which is worth over $100, so a disclosure should be required. Cleary, through Lost Coast Outpost is doing the same. Interesting point to ask the FPPC.

  18. But Rose, Salzman’s candidates aren’t spending the money this time around. Even Karen Brooks has raised more money than Mark, and she’s still going to get clobbered.

It was the money poured into the Gallegos recall effort which upped the money spent. I guess Richard is to blame since he helped Paul win in the first place.

As for Clif, it’ll be close, but I think he’ll close it out. He definitely will be outspent however. Considerably.

  19. Does anyone know what kind of disclosure requirements there are? As Heraldo is attacking Bohn left and right and supporting Seidner, and if Drayton IS Heraldo, do they not have to disclose that?

Who can a complaint be lodged with?

How much money are they spending? Disclosure is all about money.

  20. Eric, in-kind donations are reportable. The ad on blogs are in-kind donations and need to be rep;orted, because both do not have a p;aid for by the candidate statement. FPPC here we come!

  21. “As for Clif, it’ll be close, but I think he’ll close it out.”

That’s what someone said about Bonnie in the last election.

  22. Heraldo’s space is free speech. No foul.

  23. That’s what someone said about Bonnie in the last election.

It’s also what somebody said about Paul Gallegos in the last election.

  24. My comments are moderated? Does that mean I’m a threat to Rob?

  25. nice try…”.Been there and see it”; my council race cost $54,000.00. how about true facts? not fiction. $100,000.00???? serieously??? Cherie Arkley

  26. “Heraldo’s space is free speech. No foul”

But it IS a foul – IF Josh Drayton is running her campaign, he needs to disclose the bullshit that he is playing as Heraldo.

  27. I knew silly season had begun. The elections will be fought on the same level they’ve been fought for the last eight years. After all the promises made by candidate last go round, nothing has changed. In fact, as evidenced by the touting of Pot being 26% of Humboldt’s economy with great happiness and glee, things have gotten worse.
I lived in Eureka when Cherie Arkley was elected and I was pretty disgusted by the bold money tactics used to browbeat everyone into voting for her. And she wasn’t a good council member. Not for me, anyway.
That said, I also don’t like the loud, insistent voices of the left that assumes the guise of crusader and is really all about money. I’ve actually met and listened to many of the candidates being trashed here and on Heraldo. I can say this with certainty.
All of them talk a very good talk and deliver nothing.
    All of them.
Even,( and it pains me to say this) Virginia Bass. And while I hated that Arkley money was used to buy Arkely’s wife who is a very nice lady but a terrible politician a seat on the city council I am MUCH more appalled by the Humboldt Growers Association pouring money into campaigns like our D.A.’s reelection.
At least Arkley’s money was from legitimate legal sources. Pot money isn’t legitimate. The continuation of degrading our county with money made from a drug will keep going as long as we all shrug when a politician takes tons of money from growers.
No one has a vision. If we don’t want Walmart, or saw mills, or fishing, what DO we want? I’ve listened to all these politicians and none of them really know. Buzz words and bullshit. That’s what they give us.

  28. If that is true, then Heraldo must offer equal space to Rex.

  29. I just read 4 people have stepped up to claim
co chairmanship in Clifs campaign. Problem is that one of them (kent bradshaw) was heard complaining that Clif has been an utter disappointment and doesn’t even return Bradshaws calls. You know Clif (and kent) Fortuna is a small town and we remember.

The 2nd district needs a vote on the board. Arcata doesnt need 2 votes.

  30. The Humboldt Herald is nothing more than a echo chamber, a very small echo chamber.

  31. Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Vote for Clif.

  32. Be Groovy, V 4 R………….

  33. But it IS a foul – IF Josh Drayton is running her campaign, he needs to disclose the bullshit that he is playing as Heraldo.

    Actually, he doesn’t.

  34. Actually eric he does – go reread the law. Hugs. Or should I say just read the law. Hugs again.

  35. Because as we all know, anonymous innuendo is a Heraldo specialty… Two wrongs don’t make a right Eric (i know, that’s a hard thing for lawyers to get their mind around)

  36. Re: Heraldo’s identity: I know that Josh Drayton used to listen to conversations at his coffee shop and write them down in a diary especially if the conversations revealed tactics by various campaigns. He shared some with Jeff last time out. Made my BS meter work overtime. I mean, who does that???

After that I thought he was one of the lying errrr flying Heraldos. My guess is several progs help with that column but Josh is probably the main dude.

BTW, to the guy who thinks the Fortuna election will be over in June: not so unless one or the other candidates receives 50+1% of the vote. At least that’s my understanding of how it works.

  37. Barb, re:the fortuna election – arent there only two running? Clif v Estelle?

  38. Well at least I am the solo Anon.R.Mous. When is the Joel Milke/Mielke thing going to be cleared up?

  39. Eric once had Heraldo classified as a “Northern Humboldt” blog… heraldo’s identity is an open secret in some circles.

  40. Dammit, why am I always in moderation? Oh well.

  41. What I would like to know is how/why the candidate is taking calls etc. at his Supivisorial office – using taxpayer money and staff and their time to run again???

  42. Why you ask? Because he is a total idiot. Because the rules don’t apply to him. He can take calls about getting himself elected but he won’t return 1 damn call from a constituent if you have a problem!

    Worthless. Lazy. Arcatas second vote.

  43. The interesting issue is when two local blogs, Outpost and HH, both provide advertising with direct links to campaign web sites and consitantly provide topics to support their annointed candidates, and do not report the in-kind donation as would any other media outlet. If the Times Standard did they would have to give equal space to the opponent. I will be filing an FPPC complaint to clarify the issue. If the FPPC says that the ad is reportable, then the HH has a big problem because you can not give reportable donations anonomyously.

  44. Jen nailed it to date when she wrote this,”All of them talk a very good talk and deliver nothing.
    All of them.”

My Response to pot money funding campaigns…….Arkley made some of his wealth too because of those customers who used their wealth partly generated or wholly generated by pot finances… to say Arkley money is clean is just not true. In fact, many financiers/banker types make mega wealth from money that has already been laundered through the pot economy…..same deal as why County Assessors and elected county supervisors stay mum on the matter of pot cash flow generations, unless of course it is a self-serving, back-stabbing permitting process only created to flip-the-bird to the FEds to rope-a-dope the Feds to come to Humbolkdt County to “step-up” the drug war……Heck, is it time to partly blame pot for the high home prices too? If that is the case, then are developers and builders to blame?

It is always interesting to see costs skyrocket when the false notion sets-in that people have more wealth than they actually do. Tax Collectors and profiteers DEPEND on a “finangled marketplace”; whereas consumers need “Depends” to wipe-up their arses that have been handed to ’em!

  45. The flying heraldos have their knickers in a snitch. Evidently Cliffy and the progs (eliz connors, lovelace etc) got surprised when she got space on a billboard in town. It seems that fennell read the local ordinance and cliffy-kins didn’t. Pretty damn funny

  46. Is HOJ the smarter brother of Cliffie-appel-seed ?

  47. I will be filing an FPPC complaint to clarify the issue. If the FPPC says that the ad is reportable, then the HH has a big problem because you can not give reportable donations anonomyously.

Gee. So what ever happened with that?

  48. Eric you were such a dip shit. It would take months for the fppc to look into any complaint. Did it take them about a year and a half to fine your butt buddy gallegos tens of thousands for his screw ups? I will wait and see if there is a complaint and what they say. How much cracker jack did you have to eat to find your law license?

What say you?
