Another in the string of lawsuits spawned by the brief but eventful tenure of former Eureka Police Chief Garr Nielsen as been settled. EPD staffer Suzie Owsley has agreed to drop her harassment suit against the city in exchange for $150,000 cash plus an estimated $50,000 in leave accruals she used during the year she was out on stress leave. The cash portion of the settlement will be paid by the city’s insurer. As the Times-Standard article notes, Nielsen’s suit against the city is still pending. Awesome!
Grand Jury finds EPD failed to follow own policies in handling ‘report of wrongdoing which may have involved an elected official’
Damn shame we have absolutely no idea what that’s about, isn’t it?
The Grand Jury concluded that although the Eureka Police Department handled the unexplained matter “without following what little protocol their own manual contains,” and that one “member of the EPD” said it “wasn’t that important” for existing protocols to be followed in this case, “nothing was illegally done” by the department.
The same is not said for the elected official.
Ah, vindication, yes? Sometimes it smells an awful lot like teen spirit.

Did you know that Eureka City Councilmember Linda Atkins was a complete ass over Nielsen’s sacking because she’s Thomas Fucking Jefferson? Neither did we.
But look. There it is.
Throughout the history of our country, dissent has been important to bringing change to our government. Without dissent and protest, we would still be English citizens, people would still own other people as slaves, women would not have the vote and you would have no idea how completely full of shit I am.
True, we made that last part up.
But a sidenote, if we may: Yes, Linda, dissent is patriotic. As is peace. So do the city a favor and shut the fuck up.
Sue Brandenburg poised for fight with former Eureka officials, although “poised” probably isn’t the best word
She’s not called the Wicked Witch of the Westside for nothing.
In a Times-Standard letter to the editor, Sue Brandenburg musters up her two cents and five IQ points for a confused rant against the eight former Eureka officials who went and had an opinion about something without her say-so.
Not much in the way of high points, really, aside from the assertion that the Save-Garr-Nielsen contingent was able to round up only 200 signatures for their petition–because they weren’t really trying.
Yeah that’s why. Really.
Experience the whole meltdown here.
Boy oh boy! Someone needs a hug.
”I’m really ashamed to be a part of the city of Eureka now,” [Eureka City Councilwoman Linda] Atkins said, going on to charge that Nielsen’s firing was done to “demoralize the community” and that the city council and Tyson are unresponsive to the will of Eurekans. “I waste time Tuesday nights at city council meetings with the way members of our council don’t listen to their citizenry.” –Times-Standard
All in favor of her not wasting her time any longer, say aye.
Initially we thought Eureka City Councilwoman Linda Atkins’ comments to the Times-Standard about (former) Police Chief Garr Nielsen’s termination were just uninformed, unprofessional, and paranoid. But, as the note below suggests, they might also have been hypocritical. Holy crap!
You do not want to miss this.
KSLG’s charity event Friday at the Eureka Co-Op will include interviews with three of the county’s biggest knob-jobs–one in power, one out, and one holding on for dear life while his well-worn resume is passed over by every cop shop in Northern California.
According to a KSLG media alert, the schedule is as follows:
8:45am Eureka Police Chief Garr Neilsen will provide a state of the city roundup.
9:45am Former Eureka City Councilman Larry Glass will talk about his time in office.
10:20am Humboldt County DA Paul Gallegos will be on to discuss the recent election and his plans for the future.
Maybe those plans include a major three-way in the parking lot of the Eureka Co-op.
Which would be business as usual for them.
Tune in to 94.1 FM to hear their slap and tickle routine for yourself.
